IDENTIFYING BUILDINGS WITH LEAD PAINTING
Some old houses in Canada may have walls covered with lead-based paint. Chipping, peeling, or deteriorating paint from normal wear and tear (such as paint on doors, windows, stairs, and railings) or work can expose you and your children to serious health hazards: lead poisoning can cause anemia (a deficiency in red blood cells) and damage the brain and nervous system.
If your house was built before 1960: it is likely that your house contains lead-based paint
If your house was built after 1990: houses built after 1990 should not contain lead, because all paints intended for the general public and produced in Canada and the United States since that year contain practically no more lead.
LOCATION OF PAINT WITH LEAD
For houses built between 1960 and 1990, lead-based paint may have been used outdoors. Interior paint may also contain lead in smaller amounts, which can still be harmful, especially for young children.
LEAD PAINT HEALTH RISKS
The risk is even greater for children because they are growing and absorb lead easily. Even small amounts of lead-containing dust are dangerous for infants and children. Lead absorbed by the mother can also harm the health of the unborn child. At present, there is no safe level of exposure to lead.
LEAD IN PAINT ANALYSIS
If you want to know if your house contains lead-based paint, you can send paint samples to a laboratory for analysis, or hire a contractor with the X-ray scanner. detect lead on painted surfaces.
